KOTA BARU: Hashim Mohamad has a steeper mountain to climb than most, but his drive and his results in the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia would put many to shame. The cheerful 20-year-old student of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Kuala Krai, who has cerebral palsy, scored three As and two Bs in the STPM examination. He said he would do whatever it took to realise his ambition of becoming a school counsellor. The fifth of eight children, he said he owed it to his parents to make a success of himself. "I know the hardship my parents went through to raise eight children on their limited income as rubber tappers. I will never forget my father's readiness to take me on his motorbike every day to and from my school 20km away. "I want to go to university to repay my parents for everything they have done," he said yesterday after receiving an automatic wheelchair and a donation of RM10,000 from the state Economic Planning, Finance and Welfare Committee chairman Datuk Husam Musa. Hashim said he had applied to several local universities, including Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and Universiti Utara Malaysia, and hoped that he would get a place. Hashim's mother Rahimah Abdul Rahman said: "We are relieved. We can now concentrate on two of his brothers and a sister who are still studying." She said two of Hashim's elder sisters were engineers and another was studying medicine in the Czech Republic.
