Anak Penoreh Getah Dapat 5A

KUALA TERENGGANU 25 Feb.

Sailing right to the top in STPM

MARANG: Hadawiyah Mohammad, Terengganu’s top STPM scorer, studied with a vengeance to make up for her “so-so” SPM results two years ago.

“I never expected such outstanding results as I consider myself as an average student. I studied really hard because I only obtained 6As for my SPM,” said a jubilant Hadawiyah, 20, who scored 5As.

The daughter of a boat repairer is the second high achiever in her family. Her older brother was Terengganu’s best student in 2005.

The SMK Tengku Lela Segara student never attended tuition classes as her family’s financial situation did not permit “such a luxury.”

“I attended school everyday. Also, I paid full attention to what my teachers taught. I made sure I understood the lessons,” said the ninth of 10 siblings.

Hadawiyah said she wanted to enrol into Universiti Malaya’s Faculty of Economics.

She hopes her success story will inspire other students in Terengganu.

In Johor Baru, 19-year-old John Soo’s 5As is so much more sweeter as he is among the only 16 students nationwide bravely taking Further Mathematics as a subject for the examination.

“I took it as a challenge as I wanted to be a doctor. Since there were no teachers or tuition centres offering that subject, I studied on my own,” said the Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tinggi Kluang student.

He thanked his parents, teachers and friends for supporting the choices he made. He hoped to further his studies in Singapore.

Johor Education Department director Sufaat Tumin described John as a brilliant student, saying he was the only one among the 6,065 students in the state who dared to take Further Mathematics, a difficult subject, in the STPM examinations.

Asked about why there were no teachers willing to teach the subject in the school, he said they could only find a teacher if they had 15 students taking the subject.

Disabled student wants to be independent

KUALA LUMPUR: Muhammad Raizan Abdul Rahman was adamant about going to school on his own instead of being taken there by his parents. The disabled student decided to “drive” to school on his motorised wheelchair.

“He wanted to be independent,” said his father Abdul Rahman Kasim, 49, yesterday of Muhammad Raizan’s daily trips to SMK Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya.

The family lives about 1km away from his school in Kayu Ara.

“We used to send him by car from Form One to Form Five but when he entered Form Six, he decided to go to school on his own,” said Abdul Rahman.

Muhammad Raizan, 21, emerged as top scorer for the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) in the Special Candidates (Spastic) category.

He and other high achievers were present at the Malaysian Examinations Council headquarters in Selayang near here yesterday where the announcement for the STPM 2009 results were held.

An overjoyed Muhammad Raizan said his disability was not a deterrent.

“Even though I had to work a little bit harder than other students to get around due to my mobility status, I don’t think it was a big deterrent in terms of doing well because my friends and I always help each other out,” he added.

Having scored two As, an A- and a C+, he said that he did not have any particular secret for success, except to study consistently.

“You also have to ask when you’re not sure of something, or go on the Internet to get information,” he said, adding that he hoped to further his studies in the United States or Britain.

Another top scorer Yong Kai Yi said being declared one of the top STPM scorers in the nation was beyond her wildest dreams.

“I have always been an average student. In fact, I did not even get straight As for my PMR or SPM!” said the 19-year-old science student from SMK Tinggi Muar in Johor.

Nurul Imani Zakaria, 20, was similarly surprised at her achievement, adding that she was shocked when one of her teachers informed her that she had scored 5A’s.

The arts student from SMK Seri Aman, Pasir Puteh, was the top student in the Rural Category.

“My parents really motivated me a lot, and the teachers explained the topics well in class,” she said.

The other national top scorers were Yap Jun Fai, Ayu Faridah Nor Azman, Hoo Xiao Mei, Muhammad Najmuddin Firdaus Abdullah, Masmin Mensih (Special Candidates — Visually Impaired category) and Loh Wei Siong (Special Candidates — Blind category).

The two top scorers for the Malaysian University English Test were Png Ning and M. S. Prarthini.
